چکیده

Understanding how light interacts with sea water is a fascinating problem in itself, as well as being fundamental to Relds as diverse as biological primary production, mixed-layer thermodynamics, photochemistry, lidar bathymetry, ocean-color remote sensing, and visual searching for submerged objects. For these reasons, optics is one of the fastest growing oceanographic research areas. Radiative transfer theory provides the theoretical framework for understanding light propagation in the ocean, just as hydrodynamics provides the framework for physical oceanography. The article begins with an overview of the deRnitions and terminology of radiative transfer as used in oceanography. Various ways of quantifying the optical properties of a water body and the light within the water are described. The chapter closes with examples of the absorption and scattering properties of two hypothetical water bodies, which are characteristic of the open ocean and a turbid estuary, and a comparison of their underwater light Relds.

Radiative heat transfer: many-body effects

Heat transfer by electromagnetic radiation is one of the common methods of energy transfer between objects. Using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we have studied the effect of particle arrangement in the transmission of radiative heat in many-body systems. In order to show the effect of the structure morphology on the collective properties, the radiative heat transfer is studied and the re...

Heat Transfer Study of Convective-Radiative Fin under the influence of Magnetic Field using Legendre Wavelet Collocation Method

The development and production of high performance equipment necessitate the use of passive cooling technology. In this paper, heat transfer study of convective-radiative straight fin with temperature-dependent thermal conductivity under the influence of magnetic field is carried out using Legendre wavelet collocation method. The numerical solution is used to investigate the effects of magnetic...

Computational Study of Radiative and Convective Heat Transfer in a Cylindrical Combustion Chamber

In this paper, the effect of cold air on the fluid flow inside the cylindrical combustion chamber and its wall temperature distribution have been studied computationally, taking into account the effect of radiative heat transfer from hot gases. The results have been compared with the case that radiative heat transfer was neglected. It is observed that the reattachment length increases when incr...

ANALYSIS OF COMBINED CONDUCTION AND RADIATION HEAT TRANSFER IN A RECTANGULAR FURNACE INCLUDING TWO FLAMES

Abstract: The present study deals the theoretical modeling aspects of coupled conductive and radiative heat transfer in the presence of absorbing, emitting and scattering gray medium within two-dimensional square furnace including two flames. The gray radiative medium is bounded by isothermal walls which are considered to be opaque, diffuse and gray. The well known discrete ordinate method (DOM...

Some Unsolved Problems in Atmospheric Radiative Transfer: Implication for Climate Research in the Asia–Pacific Region

A number of unsolved problems in atmospheric radiative transfer are presented, including the light scattering and absorption by aerosols, the effect of mountains on radiation fields, and radiative transfer in the atmosphere–ocean system, with a specific application to the Asia–Pacific region. We discuss the issues of two nonspherical and inhomogeneous aerosol types, dust and black carbon, regar...

Radiative transfer modeling through terrestrial atmosphere and ocean accounting for inelastic processes_ Software package SCIATRAN

SCIATRAN is a comprehensive software package which is designed to model radiative transfer processes in the terrestrial atmosphere and ocean in the spectral range from the ultraviolet to the thermal infrared (0.18–40 μm). It accounts for multiple scattering processes, polarization, thermal emission and ocean– atmosphere coupling. The main goal of this paper is to present a recently developed ve...
